Dairy Industry

The New Zealand Dairy Industry currently has approximately 13,000 supplying dairy farms and 1 major company (Fonterra Cooperative Group) that encompasses the former Dairy Board, New Zealand Dairy Group and Kiwi Cooperatives. Smaller companies account for approximately 6% of milk supply. Farm numbers are declining annually as average herd size increases and this increase requires increasingly sophisticated management systems to be in place and operating correctly.

Competing internationally requires a huge commitment to quality. New Zealandís quality standards are generally driven by EU standards.

One of the biggest challenges facing companies is the ability to transfer increasingly complex knowledge requirements to farm managers to allow them to meet the companyís quality requirements. This is the role that QCONZ fulfills on behalf of a number of dairy companies throughout New Zealand.

QCONZ provides on-farm auditing services and associated advisory services to Fonterra Co-operative, Dairy Goat Co-Op, Open Country Dairies, Miraka Dairy Company, Fresha Valley and the NZ Organic Dairy Farmerís Co-Op. This goes beyond simply checking systems on farm to include ongoing systems development and consultancy to assist dairy companies and farmers achieve milk quality excellence.
